The archaeological site of Xochitecatl

The archaeological site of Xochitecatl is a unique place in the history of Mesoamerica dedicated to the female cult from Tlaxcala discovers a magical and mysterious world that frames our pre-Hispanic cultural heritage.
 

Four monumental buildings are monitored during the course of centuries by the volcanoes of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl Malintzi, it is the pyramids of Las Flores, The Serpent of The Spiral and the base of the Volcanoes.

Here are combined worship since ancient times to life, combining wind, cloud and rain that bring life and rebirth in the great pyramid of Xochitecatl, the "Place of the Lineage of Flowers".

   
Located at the top of an extinct volcano, the archaeological zone Xochitecatl allows visitors an unforgettable experience, a reunion with our roots and especially the direct contact with nature. It is at the same time a mysterious place, a legend for many years caring Goddess Xochitl and watched the ceremonial center, his quarters and did not allow anyone near.

Pretending to wash clothes in the nearby river, was a woman of exotic beauty that paid to men just by looking, asking them to help him cross the river, feared albo wet your clothes. But once in midstream, the beautiful woman was transformed into a huge snake that killed without mercy to the young men and let your body take him along.

The abundance of archaeological materials obtained during the research process, allowed to observe relevant material cultural areas as Teotihuacan. Figurines moving limbs and Tlaloc vessels were rescued, there is also material corresponding to the Postclassic and we close the presence of Cholula. Among the most salient findings highlight two monolithic stacks Formative Period, richly dressed and full of colorful female figurines.

   
They are richly adorned with flowers, carrying their babies on their backs, arms and legs, there are also figures of children and elderly. The Building of the Serpent corresponds to the Formative Period, is located south of the main square and has a ramp access. Here you can see the different stages of construction on all four sides of the building. It contains at the top a monolithic stack, inside which a mutilated sculpture of a snake was found.

The Spiral Building, located west of the main square is circular in shape and also belongs to the Formative Period, during the excavations no access type is found. That is, it presented no steps, so it is believed that the ascent was made on the trail of the walls around the building to get to the top. From this plinth two child burials, one of them accompanied by a glass incense burner, an earthen vessel, several large pots and an anthropomorphic figurine with double drilling earmuffs recovered.

The Basement Volcanoes is located at the center of the main square structure, this building was built in the Formative Period. Undergoes a series of structural changes in the Classic Period, the oldest building is covered by a new one that has a different construction technique. One can observe a deviation of 16 degrees relative to the magnetic and similar to that used for the line of north Teotihuacan city.

   
The main material of this building are three glasses of Tlaloc, a brazier deep Teotihuacan style and all the female figures that allude to fertility. Visit Xochitecatl "The Place of the Lineage of Flowers", is a fantastic experience, as the visitor can view from the top of the pyramid of flowers around the Puebla-Tlaxcala Valley. It will be appreciated that territory were the four estates of the former republic of Tlaxcala and breath taking views of the volcanoes of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl Malintzi.  

It features a museum with a collection of fantastic animals and female figurines with features of toads, jaguars and snakes.

   
Location: From the city of Tlaxcala take federal highway turning left on Santa Anita Nopalucan or the road to Santa María Nativitas, passing the town of San Miguel Xochitecatitla.
